Available October-March. You must be an existing client receiving facial services to began the chemical peel sessions. For African American skin, it's important to choose chemical peels that are gentle yet effective in addressing concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne, or uneven skin tone without causing irritation or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), which darker skin tones are more prone to. Here are a few types of chemical peels that are generally considered safe for African American skin when applied properly: Glycolic Acid Peels (AHA) – Glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is effective for treating acne, fine lines, and pigmentation issues. It’s a mild exfoliant, but can still deliver visible results for hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. Lactic Acid Peels – Another AHA, lactic acid is often gentler on the skin, making it a good option for darker skin tones. It helps with exfoliating dead skin cells, fading dark spots, and promoting an even complexion. Salicylic Acid Peels (BHA) – Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA), is great for treating acne and is commonly used for oily or acne-prone skin. It penetrates deep into the pores to clear out blockages and reduce inflammation, which can be beneficial for preventing post-acne scars. TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peels – A TCA peel is often used for deeper exfoliation. While more intense, it can be safe for African American skin when done in a controlled, gradual manner by a professional. TCA can help with issues like melasma. Mandelic acid peels are a type of chemical exfoliation that use mandelic acid, an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds. It's known for being gentle yet effective in treating various skin concerns. When it comes to African American skin, mandelic acid can offer several benefits: Gentle Exfoliation: Mandelic acid has larger molecules compared to other AHAs like glycolic acid, which means it penetrates the skin more slowly. This makes it a good option for those with darker skin tones, as it's less likely to cause irritation, redness, or hyperpigmentation. Hyperpigmentation and Dark Spots: It helps lighten dark spots, sun damage, and melasma, which are commons for people with deeper skin tones. Mandelic acid works by encouraging skin cell turnover and reducing excess melanin production.
